If you read our piece last week on digital marketing quotes you might have  noticed one very important element of digital marketing that was left out of the collection – the oft-discussed, ever-enigmatic SEO (and quotes about it).  Leaving SEO quotes out of that first assemblage wasn’t actually an oversight.

What really happened when I started to sort through all my marketing quotes was that I noticed that quote after quote was an SEO quote in some capacity; in fact, there were nearly twice as many SEO quotes than any other subject I’d focused on.

It shouldn’t have been surprising to me that there are so many great SEO quotes. Tons of people out there are always talking about SEO. It’s mysterious; we don’t officially (and may never) know all of its rules, and it can, in theory, make or break your company’s success on the Internet.SEO quotes help ensure your site comes up on page 1 of Google

Because there are so many good SEO quotes on the web, we decided that we would dedicate an entire post to snippets of wisdom about the subject. Each one of these SEO quotes should give you a better understanding of the nature of practice in general, as well as what you should (or shouldn’t) do when it comes to optimizing your site.

General SEO Quotes

“Basic search engine optimization (SEO) is fundamental. And essential. SEO will help you position your website properly to be found at the most critical points in the buying process or when people need your site.” –Victoria Edwards

“SEO isn’t about gaming the system anymore; it’s about learning how to play by the rules.” –Jordan Teicher

“The beauty of SEO is that, instead of pushing a marketing message onto folks who don’t want to hear what you have to say, you can reverse-engineer the process to discover exactly what people are looking for, create the right content for it, and appear before them at exactly the moment they are looking for it. It’s pull vs. push.” –Cyrus Shepard

“Social may be sexy, but search still pays the bills.” –Tom Pick

“Search engines aren’t trying to make life harder for website owners. They see search as a product, and as they improve their product, the game changes by default.” –Kathryn Aragon

“Search engines are unique in that they provide targeted traffic—people looking for what you offer. Search engines are the roadways that make this happen. If search engines cannot find your site, or add your content to their databases, you miss out on incredible opportunities to drive traffic to your site.” – Rand Fishkin

“Think of SEO this way: If a customer-focused content marketing program is the sandwich, then SEO is the mayonnaise. It touches nearly everything and enhances the overall flavor of the sandwich, but on its own, it’s not very appetizing.” –Lee Odden

“These days, a practitioner of search engine optimization is more of a content experience analyst who focuses on optimizing and deploying content across multiple devices and platforms. It’s all about building high-quality, useful, intent-based content for all stages of the buyer journey so as to be there in a consumer’s moment of need.” –Winston Burton

“SEO is constantly changing. New updates are released, new trends are discussed and new strategies are developed. It is something that will constantly evolve.” –Jonathan Long

SEO quotes explain the SEO puzzle“If content is king, then links are queen. Build a network of quality backlinks.” –Richard Burckhardt

“You can’t fake it. To be quite blunt, search engines are getting smarter and smarter. Be genuine. Spending money to trick a search engine (buying links, keyword stuffing, link wheels, etc) will just be a waste. Focus on building a quality user experience instead.” –Neil Patel and Ritika Puri

“External links are links from websites other than your own. Google relies heavily on external links to determine how good a post is. And this makes sense, doesn’t it? You can talk about yourself and your own skills all day long, but no one will believe you. But as soon as other people begin bragging about you, others take notice.” –Brandon Turner

“Meta descriptions are also important. They are a 160 character sales pitch for your page within search results. So, make each one as unique and persuasive as possible. “-Kristi Hines

“Creating evergreen content is a great strategy for improving search rankings, as well as making your site a more useful one. A piece of news will often do well in Google while it’s fresh topical, but will fade thereafter. It doesn’t deliver long-term traffic. However, a more useful article that contains valuable advice and insight will attract the kinds of links and engagement metrics that Google is looking for, and is more likely to perform well in the search rankings over a longer period of time.” –Graham Charlton

“SEO is a long-term investment, and every company needs to be prepared to invest in the work of SEO over the long term. Frequently publishing unique and valuable content is the first step, but the ongoing work of SEO will be continually promoting that content, building social media channels, and building the overall brand by developing relationships with reputable websites and blogs.” –Jayson DeMers

“A real estate agency in Wichita has no shot at ranking for the phrase “real estate;” a lawyer in Fresno has no shot at ranking for the word “lawyer.” Optimize for relevant, specific keywords that will bring targeted traffic.” –Matt McGee

“Look at what your competition is doing well, and determine where it is falling short, in order to gain a true understanding of your competitive landscape. This will help guide your content creation and optimization efforts.” –Jim Yu

“A regular site audit is an easy way of detecting such glaring gaps in your SEO and fixing them ASAP. If you haven’t been doing site audits so far, get into the habit now. Your site and its search visibility will thank you for it.” –Pratik Dholakiya

Content and SEO Quotes

“The era in which some SEO tricks were sufficient to get your website to rank high in Google has long ended. Nowadays, good content is king. And good content also leads to more Facebook likes and shares, tweets and return visitors to your website. Of course, you can do some extra things to maximize the SEO friendliness of your post, but most important is: just write a very, very good post!” –Marieke van de Rakt

“SEO and content marketing are BFFs. Traditionally, SEO aims to create content that attracts search love, whereas content marketing aims to create content that humans love… or find useful or valuable. But in a world where social sharing is more important than ever… shareable content is key to long-term SEO success.” –Ann Handley

“If you’re going to post content on your site anyway, you might as well take the time to make sure Google takes notice of your effort.” –The Content Factory

SEO quotes make clear than content is king“If you didn’t already know, interactive content is perhaps one of the most powerful tools for SEO. In the past, it was customary to stuff as many keywords as possible into a single blog post – even if it made the post incoherent – because that’s what Google responded to. Today, however, Google rewards sites that provide content people will actually enjoy, share, and engage with.” –Philip Kushmaro

“Content that creates happy searchers will be content that makes Google look smart for finding it.” –Sonia Simone

“Some marketers who work on SEO may cling to technical considerations and/or black hat strategies, and insist content marketing is just one small part of an SEO strategy. There are also content marketers who ignore SEO and dreamily whisper, “If I build it, they will come.” But as Google’s algorithms become more sophisticated and more adept at understanding and identifying high-quality content, marketers need to see the light: good content is good SEO, and good SEO drives good content.” –Nate Dame

“The link between SEO and content is inextricable. Why do you want a good sitemap? So people can more easily find and access your content. Why do you want an optimized robots.txt? So search engines can better crawl your site, and so readers can see the content. Why do you want the right tags in the right places? So your content can get stellar indexing, accurate search results, and more readers of your content. It all comes back to content.” –Neil Patel

“Never lose sight of the fact that all SEO ranking signals revolve around content of some kind.” –Duane Forrester

“Say you are searching for new jeans. Wouldn’t you prefer to search on sites that you can purchase from directly rather than go down a rabbit hole once you’ve tracked down the perfect pair? Tomorrow’s search engines prefer the simpler option too and will reward content that enables users to complete their desired transactions quickly, conveniently, and in as few clicks as possible.” –Jodi Harris

“There is no replacement for a website that is properly set up for quality SEO – it will make every other tactic you use to improve your SEO much more impactful.  The architecture is like the grains – you can’t have pasta without noodles and you can’t have a sandwich without bread- they are considered staples for a reason (even if they are a bit out of fashion lately).” –William Harris

Social Media and SEO Quotes

There are very valid reasons for being active on all forms of social media even if social media, for now, doesn’t have much or any effect on search rankings. An active social presence combined with good network building can be a major contributor to growing a brand reputation, better customer service, developing trust and authority, as well as bringing traffic to your sites via the links you post.” –Mark Traphagen

“Social and search marketing are inescapably interwoven art forms, twin daughters of different mothers, peanut butter and chocolate.” –Marty Weintraub

“Your content, assuming it’s original and useful, is going to serve as bait, and your social channels are going to serve as fishing poles, putting the bait in front of the right eyes. “ –Jayson DeMers

“Sites that tend to get high social engagement also tend to be sites that are so excellent that they also attract many other signals (such as links) that do actually contribute to search ranking power.” –Mark Traphagen

SEO quotes discuss its relationship with social media“Just because Google says that social signals don’t currently impact search rank doesn’t mean they never will. Social media shows no sign of becoming a less important part of a brand or person’s online presence anytime soon; moreover, given that link-building strategies like guest blogging have become a less reliable way to indicate the quality of a webpage, it makes sense that search engines would begin to look for other signals of authority and value.” –Chloe Mason Gray

“Doing Social Media without SEO is like pouring water into a sandcastle moat.  It looks good and feels good for a minute but has little enduring benefit.” –Josepf Haslam

 Mistakes in SEO Quotes

“If you’re not meeting your visitors’ needs, it doesn’t matter how ‘optimized’ your site is.” –Stoney deGeyter

“A common side effect of a poorly executed SEO campaign is a lack of additional leads or sales. That usually indicates your keyword terms missed the mark and need to be re-evaluated for relevant to the target audience. The right keywords = leads and sales.” –Kent Lewis

“Yes, the days of hitting a certain % of keyword density are behind us; writing specifically for search engines is a thing of the past. Problem is that many people have taken this too literally and think that Google has advanced enough to understand the context of pages without much content. While we’ve moved away from the keyword stuffing days of the 2000’s, in order for a website to rank, keywords must exist on the page. Although their algorithm is pretty advanced Google can’t read your mind (yet).” –Christian Sculthorp

”Are you uploading files named infographic.png or ebook.pdf? If so, then your files are not optimized for search because no one searches for just infographic or e-book without specific keywords relating to what the infographic or e-book is about. Before you upload any file you want to eventually be found in search engines, change the file name to something meaningful.” –Nathan Chan

”The dangers of keyword stuffing are real and harsh. Including a phrase too many times throughout your site or in an unnatural context won’t just decrease your ranks—it will also turn off your customers. If you’re ever in doubt, read your selection of text out loud—if it sounds weird or funny, you know something’s off. –Larry Alton

“Even content that is well-written, attractively presented and expensive to create will underperform without careful preparatory research.” –Trond Lyngbo

Changes in SEO Quotes

“Remember in preschool when you’d draw on the walls and your teacher would say, “If you can’t learn how to use the crayons then I’m going to take them away from you”? You would laugh and continue drawing on the walls, only to have the teacher take your crayons. Now imagine the crayons are Meta keywords and Google is that mean, old preschool teacher. Google took Meta keywords away because we didn’t use them correctly. “ –Martin Link

SEO quotes explain that the SEO algorithm is always changing“With every algorithm update, Google and other search engines move themselves closer to achieving move user-friendly results while weeding out unfairly ranked pages. Some tricks may help boost rankings or traffic temporarily, but a quick win today may result in an overwhelming penalty down the line.” –Phil Labon

“In the past few years, Google has really thrown down the gauntlet with updates like Penguin and Panda, essentially saying that if you game the system, you’re risking your entire business (because Google has removed and will continue to blacklist websites that game the system). It’s the long-overdue coup-de-grace for grey-hat and black-hat SEO trickery. “ –Ryan Connors

“Technical SEO doesn’t win traffic anymore. It merely sets your site up for success. “ –Neil Patel

“With Penguin, which targets unnatural linking patterns, soon to be a continuously updating piece of the puzzle and Panda now part of the main algorithm, the focus is beginning to shift away from what can cause Google to take a dim view of a site and toward what the search giant wants to reward.” –Matt Clough

“The theme for SEO in 2016 is adapt or die. With every passing Google algorithm update, it gets harder and harder to cheat the system. If your goal in the coming year is to get results at any cost through black hat tactics, you’re in for a rude awakening.” –Roman Sukharenko

“With every algorithm update, Google is getting smarter at tackling all the tricks that some webmasters implement for better ranking. Finding loopholes and spamming sites may have helped people in manipulating their search engine rankings before. These unethical tactics will no longer work in their favor with the upcoming updates. In fact, they might end up punished for implementing such tricks and fall in the rankings.” –Shane Barker
